Ivory and Gebrekidan, both reporters for The New York Times, were part of the team that won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. They were recognized for their courageous and extensive coverage of the coronavirus pandemic, which illuminated racial and economic disparities, exposed failures in government responses both in the U.S. and globally, and helped fill a critical data gap that allowed local governments and healthcare systems to better manage the crisis.
